Professional Fluoride Treatment

Our dentist at Norwood Dental Centre in Winnipeg uses fluoride to strengthen teeth and protect them from decay. Both children and adults can benefit from fluoride treatment.

What is Professional Fluoride Treatment?

Fluoride is a natural mineral that can prevent tooth decay by re-mineralizing the enamel of the tooth. Fluoride treatments at your dentist office prevent harmful bacteria from building up in the mouth.

Fluoride For Adults & Children

Fluoride can benefit both adults and children.

Your dentist may recommend treatment if you are an adult with a higher risk of developing cavities. Your dentist may also suggest treatment for your child, to help their teeth grow strong.

If your child is under the age of three, be sure to consult with your dentist to find out if they have a higher risk of tooth decay or cavities and may need fluoride treatment.

Fluoride Treatment Process

Professional fluoride treatments generally take just a few minutes. The fluoride may be in the form of a solution, gel, foam or varnish. Typically, it is applied with a cotton swab or brush, or it is used as a rinse or placed in a tray that is held in the mouth for several minutes.

Your dentist may tell you to avoid eating or drinking for 30 minutes after the treatment so the fluoride can fully absorb.

Fluoride Overuse

Fluoride is safe in appropriate doses, but overuse can cause dental fluorosis (white spots on the teeth).

This is a cosmetic condition that can develop if a patient is exposed to excessive fluoride too young, however, it very uncommon, and not a concern for most people.
