Laser Dentistry

At Norwood Dental Centre we use technology to support our dental practice. Our dental lasers are an alternative to traditional dental tools. Using laser energy and water spray, we perform many dental procedures with little or no freezing, or without a drill.

What is Laser Dentistry?

A dental laser is a device that emits a single wavelength of light energy directed on tooth, gum or soft tissue to repair decay, gum disease, or soft tissue disorders with precision and accuracy.

How We Use Lasers

At Norwood Dental Centre, our dentists use lasers for a variety of treatments including:

  • To remove tooth decay and prepare the surrounding area for a filling
  • To reshape gums and remove bacteria during gum disease treatments
  • To remove bone around teeth in crown lengthening procedures
  • To help sterilize teeth during a root canal procedure
  • To treat cold sores and canker sores
  • To treat face and jaw pain (TMD/TMJ) through Low Level Laser Therapy
  • To promote faster healing of surgical sites through a process called bio-stimulation
  • To desensitize and anesthetize teeth where possible

Cosmetic Laser Therapy

Our Winnipeg dentists use laser therapy in a number of cosmetic dental procedures.

Dental lasers can be used to reshape and contour gums, and to activate the peroxide bleaching solution to speed up the teeth whitening process.

Why We Use Lasers

Lasers allow our dentists to perform dental procedures with less pain and fewer medical interventions. The laser beam sterilizes the affected area and seals off blood vessels, which minimizes the chance of swelling, bleeding or infection. The need for anesthesia is also reduced and sometimes even eliminated.

Lasers can also be helpful for patients who feel anxious about visiting the dentist because they allow the dentist to use the drill less. Overall, this means that patients are much more comfortable both during and after treatment.
